Which Direction to Knit and How to Number Your Loom

I encourage every new knitter to number their loom. The one in the image was numbered with a Sharpie. This is very helpful if you are following any of my instructions as I often refer to various peg numbers. But it also enables you to determine which direction you want to knit.

I am right-handed. Since my dominant hand is my right one, I prefer to knit clockwise, which allows me to hold the loom and working yarn in my left hand and the loom hook in my right.

Because of this, I numbered the 12-peg loom with the numbers going clockwise around the loom. If you hold the loom so the anchor peg is at the top. Then number them almost as if you were numbering a clock with 1 being the first peg to the right of the anchor peg. Keep in mind that when knitting, you typically hold the loom so the anchor peg is toward you and in this position, 1 is the first peg on the left. (I recommend you do this in pencil first, so you can wipe off if you make a mistake. Then trace over it with a permanent marker.)

If you are left-handed, it might be more comfortable for you if you flip it around. But it’s all up to you. You will likely find it easier to follow the instructions exactly and then flip it around once you learn it. At least, that is what I have found.
