True Knit and Purl Stitches
The true knit stitch is also called the traditional or classic knit stitch. Many feel that this stitch is more defined and closer to what is produced through needle-knitting than the others. That may be, but in my opinion, it is a lot of extra work and the u-wrap stitch looks the same. I might feel differently if I was knitting a sweater. But I’ve not run into any cats who have complained about the type of stitch I used.
To do the true knit stitch, you start out like the flat knit by holding the yarn flat against the peg.
Then, take you hook from under the loop on the peg, snag the working yarn and pull it down under the loop and then out. You should have a loop from you working yarn that extends out from the loop on the peg.
Now, holding the working yarn loop, you are going to lift off the peg loop and replace it with the working yarn loop. Then pull the working yarn so the loop is tight.
Like I said, it’s a lot of work.
Purl Stitches
The purl stitch is basically the same as the true knit stitch, except the working yarn is held under the loop on the peg. The yarn is then pulled up from underneath.
The purl stitch ends up being the knit stitch in reverse. You can use it to make patterns or ridges in your knitting.
